From my perspective, I kept hearing that phrase and wondered to until I hear the no infamous quote “The Money is the Lists” and that is when it hit me; an Email List.
That is when I set off on a quest to build my own list or multiple lists.
My reasoning was very simple. Create a page to collect the email address, write a couple of articles and post them, and then sit back and watch the list grow.
Well, I sat. And sat. And sat even longer. Maybe five people joined. Then it hit me. I did not do something right.
It was not in the page itself but rather an element that was missing and I eventually found it. Plus, once I discovered what was missing there was another element that would help sustain the list so it would not stagnate.
The First Missing Element
Having something that someone wants. That is as simple as it gets. This “something” can be as easy as knowledge, a product, or even access to a special site. Irregardless, it is something others will desire.
In my case, I stated some facts and common information and i got nothing to show for it. That was my first big failure in pursuing a Lists.
The Second Missing Element
Give your Lists more than they bargain for. This was hard for me because once my lists started to grow I just sat there and watched it. It never occurred to me to send out emails periodically to let my subscribers know that “I am still here working on GREAT ideas”.
You see, I was building my lists for a single purpose and that was to ping my list with sales offers to boost my affiliate bottom line. I was being selfish.
People do not join email list just so they can get spammed with affiliate sales letters but rather people join so they can stay current with someone they feel is interesting and quite possibly help them along the way.
So for me, I have fully changed my processes so that I can be a better example and hopefully a better teacher for others to learn from. Now I do not profess to be a guru or even an IM expert but I do know right from wrong in this business and I grown tired of the empty promises.
