Thinking Of Buying A Mac

I see it in the forums alot; “I am thinking of buying a Mac” or “Is a Mac a good investment?”

I don’t mean to rain on anyone’s parade in here and I do appreciate some of the apps that MAC can do as in graphic and video production.

BUT

What will happen when Steve Jobs dies?

We all know he is the creative force behind Apple but he looks bad. I really do hope he gets better physically.

But think about. When Apple created the “Apple I” it was cool. Then the “Apple II” came out and none of the programs from the first one were compatible. I know I was there. Then the “Apple IIe” came out and the same thing. Then the McIntosh…hmmmm…the same thing. Now the Mac. Can any McIntosh programs run on the Mac?

As long as they stay within their own hardware platform they are destined to be only a subset of the bigger market.

The same thing happened with IBM when they were working on OS/2. Egos got in the way. Case in point, Lexmark was a division within IBM. They were sold off and almost immediately they became a profitable company.

Then it was highly rumored that OS/2 would be sold off. But as soon as Lexmark became profitable the talks of selling OS/2 died.

Because IBM thought they could do better when in fact IBM equated to the last nail in the coffin and a decent product with great potential died.

Now looking at the Operating System market there is only one company with scalability; Windows. Love it or Hate it. It’s here to stay unless something else comes along. [side note: Bill Gates is out at Microsoft and Windows 7 appears to be a great OS.]

THAT my friends is where I wish the Mac would step in. Port their OS to the Intel platform and enable it to run the current PC apps and they would have a winner and a TRUE competitor to Microsoft.

IBM did have it right. Create an operating system that could run all of the Window apps and they would get customers. There is a tremendous investment at stake in the PC platform and to jump ship to a platform where nothing works that you currenty have. Is, well risky.

DO you disagree? Leave a comment and challenge my argument.
