The final piece in my technical layout for MFAs is the footer section. For a long time the footer was the area where pages were placed that you did not want people to be tempted to click on. For example, Privacy, Terms of Service, and Site Maps were some of those kinds of pages.
But in a concerted effort to improve upon our MFA design we are going to create a hybrid Breadcrumb system for navigation. In fact, it may surprise you but it will be fully dynamic; meaning the links will be changing over time.
So once the dust settles in our overall re-design the Breadcrumbs will be seen right above the links that normally appear in the footer. They are not hidden, I just chose to show them well below the fold. It is not a new tactic to place it there but rather a deliberate attempt to reduce the “Bounce Rate”.
The “Bounce Rate” has been defined as the time period that a visitor stays on a site. If you have a low bounce rate then that means your visitors really hang out on your site. If you have a high bounce rate then that may mean visitors did not see what they wanted so they move off the site.
So by placing our modified breadcrumb system below the fold and in our footer we should see better bounce rates. Which means the visitor will have to click on the back button, Home button or an Ad to leave our page.
